DSDP, von 1968 bis 1983 dauerndes Tiefseebohrprojekt, das entscheidend zum Verständnis der Entstehung der Ozeane beigetragen hat (
Plattentektonik). Im Rahmen des DSDP führte das
Bohrschiff »Glomar Challenger« 96 Expeditionen durch. Ursprünglich war DSDP ein amerikanisches
Programm, dem 1974 die UdSSR,
die Bundesrepublik Deutschland,
Frankreich,
Großbritannien und Japan beitraten. Als Nachfolgeprojekt begann 1985 das
internationale Tiefseebohrprogramm,
englisch Ocean Drilling Program (Abkürzung ODP). Wichtigstes Ziel des ODP ist die
Rekonstruktion des Erdklimas sowie der ozeanographischen Bedingungen während der letzten 30-50 Mio. Jahre.
